Wyatt Kahn

Wyatt Kahn (b. 1983, New York) lives and works in New York. He is known mainly for his investigations into the visual and spatial relationship between painting and sculpture. He stretches unprimed canvas over wooden frames and assembles complex wall-mounted works in which the gaps between the individual canvases create abstract or pictorial compositions. Rather than tracing lines and shapes directly onto the canvas, he makes them physical components of the artwork, so the wall becomes an integral part of the composition. Kahn has also developed works in which shaped stretchers combine into the form of an actual object, and in recent years he has extended the same thinking into works in lead and linen on wood panels, as well as sculpture in ABS resin. Kahn received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2006) and an MFA from Hunter College (2012). His work is in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; MOCA, Los Angeles; the Dallas Museum of Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, among others. In 2022–23 Public Art Fund presented his sculpture project Life in the Abstract in New York. Recent solo exhibitions include New Work, Rodder, New York (2025); Central Fine, Miami (2025); Cuts, Stacks & Signs: Paintings, Drawings and Prints, Knust Kunz Gallery, Munich (2025); Signs, Galerie Eva Presenhuber, Zurich (2024); and a 2024 solo exhibition at Museo Anahuacalli in Mexico City. Recent group exhibitions include Assistants, Rebecca Camacho Presents, San Francisco (2026), and the Poydras Corridor Sculpture Exhibition, New Orleans (2024).
