Eternity

Galería Mascota is pleased to open its new exhibition Eternity by contemporary artist Yves Scherer. While Scherer’s practice has previously been concerned with celebrity culture, observing the blurred boundaries between public and private life, Eternity is a more intimate reflection on the reality of family life, fatherhood and the artists own lived environment.

Previously using images of celebrities, from model Kate Moss to actress Emma Watson, as way of exploring the dystopia of online culture and fandom, Eternity is instead a collection of domestic life snap shots. For example, presented as the first work in the show we see a portrait of the artists’ own daughter Lucy in a large lenticular, paired an image of the artists own hand reaching out with a single flower. Meanwhile in another corner of the gallery, a sculpture of a pet cat sits quietly, again with the artists own hand affectionately reaching out to stroke it.

Eternity may offer the audience a chance to consider the eternal character of ‘family’, as well the eternally changing reality. Alternatively, the exhibition title may also be a meditation on the traditional methods of art making themselves, as we can see Scherer explores through the classical trope of the nude statue, as well as oil on canvas paintings.
