Pierre Jeanneret (b.1896) In the early 1950s Jeanneret began a new project at Chandigarh, in India, at the invitation of his cousin Le Corbusier, then at work on a groundbreaking architectural program there. When Le Corbusier opted out halfway through, Jeanneret became the undertaking's chief architect and urban designer. At the same time he created a furniture style to be used for the government offices and a number of private homes.

Le Corbusier (b. 1887) Architect, town planner, sculptor, painter, furniture designer… In 1925 Le Corbusier declared that the terms house, interior decoration, and armchair were to be replaced by "machine for living in", "house equipment", and "machine for sitting in." More than a mere shift in vocabulary, this was a direct challenge to accepted approaches to housing and furniture.
